We are staying with a lovely family in Ella. They cooked us amazing dinners. Do we leave a tip when we check out, and how much is appropriate?

As a homestay host myself, tips are never expected but always deeply appreciated. If the family cooked for you and went out of their way to help, leaving 1000 to 2000 LKR in the room with a nice thank-you note is a wonderful gesture.

These are all great ideas. I will round up the bill and leave a massive positive review. Thank you!

We brought some nice chocolates from our home country and gave them to the host children when we left. They loved it more than cash!

I usually just round up the final bill. If the total for the room and food was 18,500 LKR, I just hand them 20,000 LKR and tell them to keep the change.

If you are on a tight budget, leaving them a glowing 10-paragraph review on Booking.com or TripAdvisor is honestly worth more to their business than a 5 dollar tip.
