Ella Rock sunrise hike and asking homestays for an early breakfast pack
5 Answers from travellers
Most homestays in Ella are very accustomed to tourists doing the sunrise hike. If you ask the night before, they will gladly pack you sandwiches or rotis to take with you. You do not strictly need a guide if you have offline maps (Maps.me), but navigating the tea plantations in the pitch black can be confusing. A local guide costs around 2000 LKR and saves you from getting lost.
Be careful on the railway tracks in the dark! Trains do not run that early, but the wooden sleepers are slippery with morning dew.
We hired a guide through our homestay. He was excellent and even brought a thermos of sweet tea for the summit.
A local farmer tried to misdirect us onto a fake path so he could demand money to "rescue" us. Stick to the main path shown on GPS.
Bring a good headlamp. Your phone flashlight will not cut through the thick morning mist.
