Domestic flight Colombo to Jaffna vs overnight train - which is better?
I have limited time. Is flying to Jaffna worth the extra cost compared to the overnight train? How reliable are the domestic flights?

The flight is only 1 hour 10 minutes and usually reliable with Cinnamon Air or FitsAir. However, the train journey overnight is part of the Sri Lankan experience - you wake up to beautiful northern landscapes. If you value time, fly. If you want the journey, take the train (book sleeper class).
I flew both ways. The flight was smooth but the airport transfer in Jaffna added time. The train was more comfortable than I expected for overnight.
Flights get cancelled more often during monsoon season. Train is more reliable for planning. Also much cheaper.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
