Hill heritage guide based in Bandarawela so the Dowa picture my local gem What it is the DOWA (Dova) RAJA MAHA VIHARAYA near Bandarawela (right by the Bandarawela to Badulla road) is a lovely ancient ROCK temple its most striking feature is a large UNFINISHED rock cut standing BUDDHA figure carved in low relief into the rock face by the roadside (left incomplete the story goes due to invasion) plus a CAVE shrine with old murals and Buddha images tucked into the rock and a stream by the site it has a peaceful authentic living temple feel and an intriguing history (linked by legend to King Valagamba who is associated with several refuge cave temples) What is special the unfinished rock relief Buddha (unusual and atmospheric) the cave shrine with its old paintings the quiet roadside rock setting and the sense of a genuine local temple rather than a tourist site it is modest but characterful and historic Worth a stop YES as a quick quiet stop especially if you appreciate rock and cave temples it is a rewarding short visit (well under an hour) and being right on the road makes it effortless a real off the beaten path hill country temple Other hill country rock and cave temples around the area the hill country has cave and rock temples tucked away (the region around Bandarawela Ella and the Uva hills has several lesser shrines and the broader island has the famous cave temples like Dambulla the cave temple threads but Dowa is the handy local one) ask locally for the small hill temples How it fits the route PERFECT Dowa sits right on the BANDARAWELA to BADULLA road in the heart of the hill country (near Ella Haputale Bandarawela the hill country threads) so it slots effortlessly into your hill country travels an easy roadside pause between the bigger hill sights and train rides An easy roadside visit YES it is literally by the road (the rock Buddha is right there) so a quick stop is simple just observe temple respect (shoes off modest dress quiet at the shrine the temple etiquette threads) June note the hill country is wet now (the monsoon) but the temple including the cave shrine is fine in the rain (atmospheric in the mist) just bring a brolly So yes stop at the DOWA rock temple near Bandarawela for its striking unfinished rock cut standing Buddha and its old cave shrine a quiet historic characterful roadside temple that fits effortlessly into the hill country route an easy rewarding pause for the lover of rock and cave temples
