Our driver took us to a tea factory near Nuwara Eliya. They gave a 5 minute tour and then demanded 5000 LKR each. Is this normal.

This is a scam. Legitimate, historic tea factories (like Damro, Pedro, or Bluefield) either offer free tours or charge a very small nominal fee (like 200-500 LKR) which often includes a cup of tea. Rogue factories collude with drivers to extort tourists. Refuse to pay 5000 LKR. Always tell your driver exactly which factory you want to visit before starting the trip.

Always buy tea from the supermarket (Dilmah or similar) if you want normal prices.

We walked out. The driver was mad, but we went to Damro instead and it was great.

Damro is excellent and highly professional. Good choice.

They also lock you in the gift shop and guilt trip you into buying overpriced flavored teas.

If they demand that much, just walk out. They cannot legally force you to pay for a tour you did not agree to the price of.
