Kandy to Ella scenic train — is the first class observation car worth the extra cost?
Planning the famous Kandy–Ella train journey and I see tickets range from cheap second class up to the first-class observation car (~LKR 1,500+ through agents). Is the observation car actually that much better, or is second class just as enjoyable? We're two adults, happy to stand if needed. Also, can I book the observation car directly at the station or only through a third-party agent?

Lived in Kandy my whole life and have done this journey many times. Here is the honest breakdown:
First Class Observation Car
- Large panoramic windows, reserved seats, air-conditioned
- Cost through agents: ~LKR 1,500–2,500 per person (they add commission)
- Direct from Kandy station: LKR 800–1,000 (book at the counter, opens at 5:30 AM)
- Available: 7 AM, 10 AM, and 1 PM departures
Second Class (Unreserved)
- LKR 190 per person
- You can hang out the open doorways — honestly the best photos come from here
- Gets crowded on weekends, arrive 30 min early for a door spot
- AC not available but mountain air is cool anyway above Hatton
My honest opinion: Second class with a door spot is MORE enjoyable than the observation car for photography and the raw experience. The observation car is better if you're travelling with elderly family or want guaranteed seating. Reserve first class at the station ticket counter — never pay agent prices.
Just did this journey three days ago (second class, unreserved). Got to Kandy station at 8:45 AM for the 10 AM train and managed to get a great window seat. The views between Nanu Oya and Ella are absolutely breathtaking — Nine Arches Bridge, tea estates, waterfalls. The whole journey took about 6.5 hours. Bring snacks, there are vendors at every station. I genuinely think it's one of the best train journeys in the world.

Tickets sell out for weekend trains by 7 AM, so get there early. Weekday trains have availability most of the time up to an hour before departure. One more option worth knowing: the Viceroy Special — a vintage luxury train that occasionally runs this route on weekends. It's expensive (~USD 60/person) but includes meals and guaranteed seating. TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
