Palmyra toddy is a massive part of Jaffna culture. You will not find it in fancy tourist restaurants. You have to visit the local "Toddy Taverns" (Kallu Thaavaram) on the outskirts of the city. It is generally safe and healthy if drank fresh in the early morning before it over-ferments. Just be aware the taverns are very rustic.

Drink it before noon. By 3 PM it becomes very sour and highly alcoholic due to the heat fermenting the natural yeast.

Make sure you eat the spicy cuttlefish or crab curries they sell outside the taverns. Best local food in the north.
