Yes! Jaffna homestay hosts are incredibly proud of their unique northern culture. Ask them to cook you Jaffna Crab Curry or Kool (a traditional seafood broth). As for toddy, it is much better to ask your host to procure it fresh for you in the morning rather than venturing into the rustic local taverns yourself. Fresh morning toddy is safe, sweet, and culturally authentic.

Yes, Kool is boiled extensively. It is very safe and incredibly rich in flavor.

If you get toddy in the afternoon, it ferments rapidly in the heat and becomes very strong and sour.

Try the local Odiyal Pittu as well. Made from palmyra root.

The crab curry is insanely spicy in Jaffna. Be prepared to sweat!
