The observation car is at the very back of the train and has a massive glass window. It is air-conditioned and very comfortable. However, the windows are tinted and often scratched, making photography difficult. If you want to hang out the doors and take photos, 2nd class reserved is actually much better.

Make sure you sit on the right side of the train when heading to Kandy for the best views of the valleys.

I prefer 2nd class. The AC in 1st class is freezing cold, and you miss the fresh mountain air.
