I heard Gal Oya is the only park where you can do a boat safari. Is it worth the detour, and do you actually see swimming elephants?

Absolutely worth it. It is incredibly serene compared to Yala. Seeing elephants swim from island to island in the Senanayake Samudraya reservoir is a magical experience, though sightings are not 100% guaranteed.

Make sure to go early morning (6 AM) or late afternoon. Midday is too hot and the animals hide in the jungle.

We did it last week! We didn't see elephants swimming, but we saw massive crocodiles, eagles, and herds of elephants grazing on the banks. The silence of the boat compared to a noisy jeep is amazing.
