Gal Oya this week - boat for swimming elephants or is late August the empty-reservoir season
Wanted something that is not Yala traffic. Gal Oya boat safari is the swimming-elephant pitch. Guides say best is March-July when the tank is down. We can only go Monday. Boat or jeep. And we are not getting in the water, right.

You watch elephants swim from a boat. You do not swim with them. Late August can still work - dry-zone heat, animals at water - but the famous low-water crossings are more a late-dry-season thing (often quoted March-July). Book the boat first; add a jeep if you have a second slot. Quieter than Yala every month.
Boat at 6.30, eagles, crocs, one herd on an island, no mid-lake swim. Still the nicest safari of the trip.
