Getting from Hiriketiya surf breaks to Wewurukannala Vihara giant Buddha
4 Answers from travellers
It is incredibly close! Wewurukannala Vihara is located in Dikwella, just a 5 to 10 minute tuk tuk ride inland from the Hiriketiya surf break. The 160 foot seated Buddha is magnificent. The Tunnel of Hell is full of graphic, life sized models depicting the Buddhist realms of punishment, which is quite a stark contrast to the relaxing yoga vibes on the beach!
I visited the temple right after a morning sound healing session. Walking through the Tunnel of Hell definitely snapped me out of my zen state, but climbing inside the giant Buddha statue to the top was breathtaking.
The temple gets very hot by midday because the courtyard is mostly concrete. Go around 8 AM before the sun gets too harsh.
Since you are in Dikwella, you can also easily combine this temple trip with a visit to the Hummanaya Blowhole just a bit further down the coast.
