We are in Ella and want to do a tea tasting. Is the massive Halpewatte Tea Factory tour too commercialized, or is it better than visiting a small independent estate.

Halpewatte is the largest tea factory in the Uva region, but it is not a tourist trap. Their guided tour is incredibly detailed, taking you through the exact withering, rolling, and drying processes. The tea tasting at the end is professionally done, allowing you to sample different grades from BOPF to silver tips. It is highly educational and worth the visit.

Just be aware that tea factories usually do not run their massive machinery on Mondays because there is no plucking done on Sundays. Try to visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday to see it in full action.

The tuk tuk ride up to Halpewatte is very steep. Make sure your driver has a strong engine if you have multiple people in the back!

You can buy factory fresh tea straight from their shop. It makes for the absolute best souvenirs because you cannot get that freshness in supermarkets.

I loved it. The view from their tasting balcony overlooking the Ella Gap is one of the best viewpoints in the entire town.
