Driver who has seen many green faced passengers so the honest motion sickness picture and how to cope The roads honest truth YES the hill country roads are WINDY lots of hairpin bends and twists climbing to Kandy Ella Nuwara Eliya and the highlands and the driving (frequent overtaking braking) can make a sensitive stomach queasy so your concern is valid the lowland and coastal roads are gentler it is mainly the mountain ascents and the bendy bits The boats whale watching boats (Mirissa Trincomalee) go out on the open sea and CAN be rough or rolly (especially in choppier conditions) so seasickness is a real possibility on those the lagoon and river boats are calm (sheltered water) it is the open sea whale trips that are the risk How to cope on the ROADS sit in the FRONT (front passenger seat best eyes on the road ahead and the horizon) keep your eyes on the HORIZON or the road ahead (not your phone or a book reading kills you) fresh AIR (open the window) take it slow ask the driver to drive smoothly and stop for breaks (a good driver will the car and driver threads) MEDICATION take a motion sickness tablet (widely available at pharmacies here or bring your own) BEFORE you set off not once you feel ill GINGER (ginger biscuits ginger beer the local ginger beer is great ginger sweets) genuinely helps acupressure WRIST BANDS work for some eat light beforehand (not heavy or greasy) On the BOATS take the motion sickness tablet WELL BEFORE boarding sit in the MIDDLE of the boat (least movement) low and central eyes on the HORIZON fresh air on deck (not in a stuffy cabin) ginger again go on a CALMER day if you can (ask about sea conditions rougher seas mean rougher trips) choose a reputable operator with a stable boat General plan medicate in advance (tablet before travel) sit front in cars and central on boats eyes on the horizon fresh air ginger and light eating and you can enjoy the scenery so to cope with the windy roads and boats take a motion sickness tablet BEFORE you travel (not after) sit in the front of the car or the middle of the boat keep your eyes on the horizon get fresh air use ginger (the local ginger beer and sweets) and ask your driver to go smoothly and stop for breaks do that and the beautiful bendy hill roads and the whale boats need not leave you green
