Can we see wild elephants or monkeys just by driving around the countryside near Ella.

Yes, you can often spot wild elephants without paying for a safari simply by driving along the Buttala to Kataragama road, which is about a two hour drive from Ella.

Wild elephants frequently stand right next to the electric fences along the main highway near Udawalawe reservoir, hoping tourists will toss them fruit.

As for monkeys, you will easily see toque macaques and purple faced langurs swinging through the trees right around the Ella railway station and on the hike to Ella Rock.
