Safari Sunday - Yala in the rain or just go Udawalawe and see elephants

We have one safari day between the south and Ella this Sunday. Yala Block 1 still open till 1 Sep I think, but it has been raining on that side and I keep seeing muddy jeep videos. Is Udawalawe the less-stupid August move. We do not need a leopard if it means 40 jeeps in a puddle.

August rain here is usually a short afternoon dump, not an all-day close. Morning jeep (6-10) is the bet in both parks. Udawalawe in rain is still elephants - open grassland, you will see them. Yala in rain is a leopard lottery plus rutted tracks. If you have one slot and you care about actually seeing something, Udawalawe. If you have already done elephants upcountry and you want the cat, take the 6am Yala and accept you might see a lot of wet green.

Udawalawe yesterday morning, light shower at 8, six elephants in the first hour, canvas roof up for ten minutes. Fine. Bring a light shell, not an umbrella in the jeep.

Yala Block 1 is still running. It closes for the annual rest around the start of September - do not mix that up with closed because rain. Rain does not void your ticket; a washed-out track might cut the loop short. Ask the park jeep, not Instagram.
