We want to avoid the massive jeep crowds at Minneriya. Are there good local homestays near the Wasgamuwa National Park entrance where we can arrange a quiet morning safari to see the elephants.

Wasgamuwa is a fantastic alternative! It is incredibly underrated and you will often have elephant sightings completely to yourself. There are several authentic, family-run homestays near the Hettipola entrance. Because it is a rural farming community, the homestay hosts usually have direct connections with the best local jeep drivers who know the park inside out.

Ask your homestay mother to pack you a traditional rice and curry lunch wrapped in a banana leaf. Eating it near the Mahaweli River inside the park during your safari is an amazing experience.

The roads getting to Wasgamuwa from the main cultural triangle towns can be quite rough and potholed, so factor in extra travel time if you are taking a tuk-tuk.
