I am renting a tuk-tuk for 3 months to chase swells around the island. What are the legal requirements for third-party versus comprehensive insurance for rented three-wheelers.

By Sri Lankan law, all vehicles on the road must have at least third-party insurance. However, for a rental, you must insist the rental agency provides Full Comprehensive Insurance specifically categorized for "Rent a Car/Vehicle" usage. If the insurance certificate says "Private Usage Only" and you crash while renting it, the insurance is void, and you will be personally liable for all damages and medical bills.

Always ask to see the physical insurance card and check the expiration date. Keep a photocopy of it in the glovebox along with the vehicle revenue license. Police will ask for both at checkpoints.
