Driver who has moved many boards and big bags so the oversized gear picture good news it is very doable TUK TUKS yes they take SURFBOARDS routinely (the surf towns especially) the board goes along the side resting on the roof frame or held alongside the drivers are used to it (in surf areas it is totally normal) for a longer board or a big bag it works fine just agree it with the driver in non surf areas a driver may be less practised but still manages a short hop a tuk tuk is the everyday way to move your board locally TRAINS yes you can take a SURFBOARD on the train (a great cheap way to move it along the coast or to the hills) put it in the luggage area or the guard or luggage van (longer boards go in the baggage car you may pay a small luggage fee) or stand it in the vestibule at the carriage end the trains are board friendly especially the coastal and surf routes a bike can go in the luggage van too (with a fee) BUSES possible but harder a board on a crowded bus is awkward (it can go on the roof rack on some long distance buses or stowed in the luggage hold of an intercity coach) doable on the bigger coaches for local crowded buses it is a squeeze the train or a private transfer is easier for a board CAR and VAN TRANSFERS the EASIEST a hired car or van (or a driver) takes a board and gear with no fuss (a van for a longer board or lots of gear roof racks available) the simplest stress free option airport to surf coast a private transfer with your board is the smoothest start DOMESTIC FLIGHTS the small domestic planes (the domestic flight threads) have limited space and strict weight and size limits so a surfboard may be difficult or not allowed or costly check with the operator in advance (oversized sports gear is restricted on the small aircraft) the road and train are usually the way for a board AIRPORT and international bring it in a proper BOARD BAG (padded) declare it as sports luggage with your airline (oversized baggage fees may apply) from the airport take a private transfer or van to the coast How to do it smoothly use a padded board bag a tuk tuk for local moves the TRAIN for cheap coastal and cross country moves (luggage van small fee) and a private CAR or VAN transfer for the easiest airport to coast and longer trips (avoid the small domestic planes and crowded local buses for a board) plan the airport to surf coast leg as a private transfer So transporting a surfboard and oversized gear is very doable TUK TUKS take boards routinely (normal in surf areas) TRAINS take boards and bikes cheaply (luggage van small fee great for the coast) CAR and VAN transfers are the easiest and stress free (best for the airport run and long trips) buses are awkward and the small domestic planes are restricted so use a board bag and lean on tuk tuks trains and private transfers and your board will travel the island just fine
Following up took the train along the coast with my board in the luggage van for almost nothing and tuk tuks to the breaks no problem at all the board friendly trains and tuks made it effortless thank you all should have worried less
Tuk tuks take boards routinely trains take them cheaply in the luggage van and car or van transfers are the easiest especially for the airport run while buses are awkward and the small domestic planes are restricted so use a board bag and lean on tuk tuks trains and private transfers this is exactly the move my board without drama plan I needed thank you
For the airport to the surf coast just book a private van transfer with your board it is so much less stressful than wrangling a board on public transport on arrival once you are settled in the surf town the tuk tuks handle the board for daily trips to the breaks easily
