Renting a scooter to commute daily between Hiriketiya and Ahangama
7 Answers
It is technically feasible—the road is a straight line down the coast (about 45-60 mins). However, the Galle Road is notoriously dangerous with speeding crazy CTB buses and stray dogs. Commuting 2 hours daily on a scooter with a surfboard rack will exhaust you. Pick one town to base in and do occasional weekend trips to the other.
The bus is super cheap (200 LKR), but you cannot take a surfboard on it during rush hour.
Also, police target foreigners with board racks for license checks. Make sure you have your International Driving Permit endorsed by the AAC.
Driving back at dusk with the sun in your eyes while dodging buses is terrifying. Do not do it daily.
Just stay in Ahangama. The surf is much better and more varied than Hiri anyway.
If it rains, riding a scooter for an hour is absolutely miserable.
