I crave fresh vegetables but worry about the water used to wash them. Are salads safe.

In high end luxury resorts and heavily reviewed tourist cafes in places like Ella or Hiriketiya eating raw salads is generally perfectly safe. These establishments strictly use purified filtered water specifically to wash all their fresh produce to protect foreign stomachs.

However if you are eating at a tiny rustic local roadside shack you must absolutely avoid raw salads cucumbers and tomatoes. They almost certainly wash their vegetables directly under the unfiltered tap water which carries a massive risk of severe travelers diarrhea. Stick entirely to heavily cooked hot foods in those locations.
