Yes, it is wonderfully safe to picnic inside the Peradeniya gardens. The massive, beautifully manicured Great Lawn is the perfect spot to lay out a blanket and relax under the giant shade trees.
While there are macaques in the park, they mostly stay in the dense bamboo groves near the river. Just keep your food packed away when walking, and you will not have any aggressive monkey issues on the main lawns.
Scam Watch: kandy
TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
