Using public wifi networks at cafes or guesthouses in Sri Lanka is generally fine for basic browsing, but it is not completely secure. You should always use a reputable VPN when accessing bank accounts or entering passwords.

Open, unencrypted networks are vulnerable to interception anywhere in the world. Buying a local Dialog tourist SIM card and creating a personal mobile hotspot is actually significantly safer and often faster than relying on cafe wifi.

If you are staying at a high end coworking space, their networks are usually heavily encrypted and safe, but for random beach bars, definitely keep your VPN switched on.
