I heard the Somawathiya Chaitya is located deep inside a national park. Are there wild elephants actually roaming near the temple grounds and is it safe to visit for evening prayers.

Yes, the temple is literally in the middle of Somawathiya National Park. Elephants frequently cross the main access road and sometimes roam very close to the stupa. It is safe if you stay within the temple compound, but you must be incredibly cautious driving there, especially at dusk. A 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended.

The chanting mixed with the sounds of the deep jungle at dusk is a magical, deeply spiritual experience. Just coordinate with the local army checkpoint on road safety before you go.

Do not attempt to drive a small rental car there. The road gets flooded easily and if an elephant blocks the path, you need a vehicle that can safely reverse out of trouble.
