While Mount Lavinia beach is fantastic for walking enjoying a beautiful sunset and eating at the brilliant beachfront seafood restaurants it is highly discouraged for swimming. Because it is located directly adjacent to the massive urban capital the water quality is frequently very poor.

The ocean currents also bring in a significant amount of plastic debris from the city canals. You should absolutely stick to your hotel swimming pool while in Colombo and save your ocean swimming for the pristine beaches of the deep south.
