I am starting my trek in Kandy. Is the trail through Hanthana well marked and safe for a woman hiking alone. What is the total distance.

Stage 1 of the Pekoe Trail is approximately twelve kilometers and is a wonderful introduction to the highlands. The path is generally well marked, but it is always safer to use a GPS tracking app. While Sri Lanka is very safe for solo travelers, Hanthana can be quite isolated in sections. I recommend joining a small group or hiring a local guide for the first day to gain confidence. You will pass beautiful pine forests and tea estates before reaching Galaha.

Make sure to register at the trailhead if there is a ranger present. The weather at Hanthana changes fast so bring a light rain shell. The views of Kandy city from the top are unmatched.
