We want to climb the tower but we have a five year old. Is it too dangerous.

The very top section of the Ambuluwawa tower is absolutely not safe for young children. The spiral staircase wrapping around the outside of the pinnacle becomes incredibly narrow highly exposed to strong winds and the safety railings are very low.
However the lower observation decks are perfectly safe and offer spectacular panoramic views. You can easily take your five year old halfway up the tower completely securely.
The biodiversity complex surrounding the base of the tower is also fantastic for kids featuring wide safe pathways and beautiful gardens. Just keep them firmly away from the extreme upper spire.
