I heard the trail to Ella Rock is confusing and that locals might give wrong directions to force you to hire a guide. Is this true and how long is the trek.

The trail starts along the railway tracks from Ella station and then turns into the forest. It can be tricky near the long grass sections. While some stories of wrong directions exist, most people find their way using GPS apps. The hike takes about four hours round trip. If you want a zero stress experience with historical context, a guide is worth the fifteen dollars.

For a much easier but equally beautiful view, try Little Adams Peak instead. It has a well paved path and only takes about forty minutes to reach the summit. It is perfect for sunset photography without the steep climb of Ella Rock.
