I really want to see large herds of wild elephants. Is Udawalawe actually better than Yala for elephant sightings and what is the best time of day to visit.

Udawalawe is absolutely the best park in Sri Lanka for guaranteed wild elephant sightings. The park hosts around five hundred resident elephants including several magnificent tuskers and many playful calves. You will almost certainly see multiple herds during a single safari often coming very close to the jeeps as they feed on grass beside the tracks. The open grassland terrain makes spotting much easier than in the denser forests of Yala or Wilpattu.

Book the afternoon safari starting around two thirty as elephants become very active during the cooler late afternoon hours. They gather at the main reservoir to drink and bathe creating incredible photo opportunities. Combine your visit with the nearby Elephant Transit Home which rehabilitates orphaned calves before releasing them back into the wild. Feeding times are at nine, noon, three, and six.
