I have never been rafting before but the Kitulgala tours look exciting. Is it actually safe for total beginners and what difficulty level are the rapids really.

Kitulgala rafting is perfectly safe for total beginners and is one of the most popular adventure activities in Sri Lanka. The Kelani River rapids are classified between grade two and three which means exciting enough to thrill first timers but not dangerous. The full rafting course covers around seven kilometers and lasts roughly ninety minutes with calm stretches between the rapids where you can relax and enjoy the surrounding rainforest scenery.

All operators provide quality helmets, life jackets, and paddles along with a comprehensive safety briefing before starting. Experienced certified guides accompany every raft and handle the technical navigation leaving you to simply paddle and enjoy the ride. Prices start around three thousand rupees per person and often include lunch and transport from your guesthouse. The best rafting season is from May through December when water levels are ideal.
