I have heard Wilpattu is less crowded than Yala but offers similar wildlife sightings. Is this true and which park should I prioritize for my one safari experience in Sri Lanka.

Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and offers a much more peaceful safari experience compared to the heavily visited Yala. The park features unique natural lakes called villus surrounded by dense forest where leopards, sloth bears, elephants, and spotted deer come to drink. You will often have entire wildlife sightings completely to yourself without dozens of other jeeps crowding around.

The trade off is that Wilpattu has lower animal density than Yala so leopard sightings are less guaranteed. However the experience feels more authentic and wild without the safari traffic jams. The best season runs from February through October when water levels drop and animals concentrate around the villus making them easier to spot.
