Palmyra toddy is a staple of northern culture and is perfectly safe if consumed fresh. You must go early in the morning (around 8 AM to 10 AM) when it is sweet and mildly fermented. As for the dogs, they usually just sleep outside waiting for food scraps. Do not pet them, but they will leave you alone.

If a dog does bite you anywhere in Sri Lanka, it is a major health concern. Go to the Jaffna hospital for free rabies shots immediately.

If you drink it late in the afternoon, the heat causes rapid fermentation, making it highly alcoholic and sour, which might upset a foreign stomach.

We drank it out of folded palmyra leaves. It was an incredible cultural experience, completely safe.

Do not eat the super spicy raw seafood they sell outside the tavern if you have a weak stomach though.
