Kelani scare plus this rain - is a first night in Colombo 15 a bad idea or just a puddle

Friend in Rajagiriya sent photos of a waterlogged lane mid-week. We took a cheap room in a low-lying bit of Colombo, not Negombo. Old headlines about minor Kelani flooding keep popping up. Do we switch to a hotel on a hill or am I reading last month's weather.

A waterlogged lane in Rajagiriya after a dump is normal August, not a 2016-style flood headline by itself. If your cheap room is in a dip, ask the host for a ground-floor photo after the last rain. If they hesitate, book one night higher (Colombo 3 / 7, or just Negombo) and decide in daylight. Do not drive a suitcase through knee water at 1am to save $15.

Our Uber from CMB took the normal road, wet, not closed. Colombo traffic was the actual delay.

Watch the Met and Irrigation notices in the morning, not a Facebook group with photos from a different year. If the Kelani is actually at minor-flood language again, skip the river-adjacent Airbnbs.

Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
