The Kudumbigala Monastery is a spectacular, deeply ancient forest hermitage located completely off the beaten path near Arugam Bay. It features ruins scattered across massive granite boulders rising out of the dense jungle. While it is incredibly peaceful and safe from human threats, the monastery is situated directly within a highly active wildlife corridor teeming with leopards and wild elephants. You absolutely must not hike there alone late in the afternoon. Hire a local tuk tuk driver from Panama village who knows the area well to ensure you explore the ruins safely before dusk.
