We are staying at a homestay in Kitulgala and hiking to Makandawa falls. How bad are the leeches and how do we prepare.

In Kitulgala rainforest, the leeches are always active. Buy leech socks, tuck your pants in, and rub Ayurvedic Siddhalepa balm or salt/soap water on your boots. Your homestay will usually provide a soap spray.

Do not pull them off if they bite! Use salt or a lighter, otherwise their jaws stay in your skin and it gets infected.
