We are driving to Mannar this weekend to explore the historical Giants Tank. Is the water level low enough right now to see the migratory flamingos, and are there wild elephants in the same area.

Yes, late April is fantastic for flamingos. The water levels in the ancient tank are receding, creating perfect feeding grounds. You can also spot rogue bull elephants near the tank edges at dusk, so please remain near your vehicle and do not wander onto the dry lake beds on foot.

The history of that tank is mind-blowing. It was built by King Dhatusena over 1500 years ago and still sustains massive bird populations today. It is a masterpiece of ancient hydraulic engineering.
