The Muhudu Maha Viharaya is a stunning, ancient Buddhist temple complex located directly on the sweeping sand dunes just north of Arugam Bay. It features beautifully preserved stone statues and stupa ruins partially buried in the sand.

The site is completely free to enter. It is incredibly peaceful and offers a profound historical contrast to the bustling surf town nearby. Just remember to remove your shoes and cover your shoulders when approaching the ancient statues.
