We are staying near Aluthgama and often walk past the massive Kande Viharaya Buddha statue with our surfboards to get to the beach. Are there any specific rules we should follow.

As long as you are walking on the public road outside the temple gates, there is no strict religious law. However, as a sign of respect, keep your voices down, do not smoke or drink alcohol while walking past, and ensure you are wearing a t-shirt. Never carry the surfboard onto the actual temple grounds.

The road near Kande Viharaya gets very congested on Poya days. It is better to take a tuk-tuk the long way around to the beach on full moon days.
