We are visiting the Kadurugoda Viharaya ruins and Nallur temple in Jaffna Are there specific photography rules for northern cultural sites

Yes, the rules vary by religion. For Kadurugoda (Buddhist ruins), standard rules apply: cover shoulders/knees, remove shoes, and NEVER pose with your back to the stupas. For Nallur Kandaswamy (active Hindu temple), photography is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN inside the temple walls. Men must remove their shirts to enter, and women must wear long modest clothing. You can only photograph the exterior of Nallur.

Always ask for permission first with a smile and a nod. Usually they do not mind outside the gates.

Nallur is incredibly strict. They have guards watching for phones. Keep it in your bag.
