Taking general photographs of the incredible architecture and the museum artifacts at Gangaramaya Temple is completely allowed and highly encouraged by the staff.

Always look for specific signs near the inner sanctums. If a monk is actively conducting a private blessing or puja ceremony, it is polite to put your camera away out of respect.

However, the strict rule in all Sri Lankan Buddhist temples is that you must never pose for a photo with your back turned towards a Buddha statue, as this is considered highly disrespectful.
