I want to climb Pidurangala Rock for sunrise meditation. Since there is a temple at the base, do I need to cover my shoulders and knees all the way to the top.

Yes, the ticket office and entrance path go directly through the Pidurangala Rajamaha Viharaya temple grounds. You MUST cover your shoulders and knees to pass through. Once you are past the temple and into the jungle climb, most tourists remove their cover-ups (like a sarong) for the strenuous boulder scramble to the summit.

Do not meditate too close to the edge up there. The wind gusts are incredibly strong right before the sun comes up.

Bring a light scarf. You just wrap it around your waist for the first 5 minutes of the walk, then stuff it in your backpack.
