Book 2nd class reserved if possible — more space and guaranteed seat. Keep valuables and essentials in a small daypack with you; store the big bag in the overhead rack or under the seat if it fits. On busy trains, keep your luggage close and visible. Some people use small locks or cable ties for extra security. For very long journeys, consider breaking it up or shipping some gear ahead if possible. The trains aren't designed for heavy luggage, so traveling light is genuinely easier. Many stations have porters if you need help.
The overhead racks are surprisingly spacious on most trains. Just don't leave anything valuable unattended.
I traveled with a big backpack and it was manageable. Keeping the daypack with me made all the difference.
