We want to stay in a traditional mud-brick homestay in Meemure and hike to the Nitre Cave. How difficult is the road in, and do we need a local guide for the cave hike.

The 14-kilometer road from Hunnasgiriya to Meemure is notoriously brutal. A standard car will not make it. You need to hire a 4x4 or take the local village van that leaves Hunnasgiriya in the afternoon. Once you reach the village, staying in a local homestay is an incredible, off-grid experience. You absolutely need a local guide for Nitre Cave; the trail is unmarked, deep in the Knuckles forest, and it takes about 4 hours round trip.

Nitre Cave is massive and historically significant, but it has thousands of bats. The smell of guano is intense and the floor is slippery, so wear good hiking boots.
