Palmyra toddy is a cornerstone of Jaffna heritage. It is perfectly safe and even considered healthy if drank fresh early in the morning before it ferments heavily. However, the local taverns are very rustic. Go early.

Make sure to go before 10 AM. After noon, it gets very sour and highly alcoholic in the sun, which can cause an upset stomach.

We drank it out of folded palmyra leaves. It was an incredible cultural experience, completely safe.
