While Weligama is famous, Dewata beach near Galle is a brilliant, slightly quieter spot for absolute beginners. The sandy bottom is safe and the waves roll in very gently and consistently.

Closer to Ahangama, the beach break at Kabalana is fantastic for learning. The whitewash near the shore provides the perfect, forgiving environment for practicing your pop up technique.

You will find several excellent, highly affordable local surf schools scattered right along the sand at both beaches, offering board rentals and great introductory lessons.
