I am staying near the Matara Star Fort to study its unique Dutch architecture but I want to surf SK Town in the mornings. Is it a beginner friendly beach break and how close is it to the historical sites.

SK Town is just a 10 minute tuk tuk ride from the Matara Star Fort. It is a brilliant sandy beach break, perfect for beginners and intermediates. Because there is no reef, it is very forgiving. The fort itself was built in 1765 in a unique star shape to prevent cannon blind spots after the Matara Rebellion.

While checking out the Star Fort, do not forget to visit the main Matara Fort ramparts nearby. Unlike Galle, it is completely uncommercialized and gives you a raw look at 18th century garrison life.

Just a heads up that SK Town works best on a mid tide. If you go too early in the morning on a dead low tide, it tends to close out quickly.

The museum inside the Star Fort is small but excellent. They have some fascinating colonial maps of the southern coastline that show how the coastline has shifted over 300 years.
