I'll be using trains on the south coast. How safe are the stations and what facilities do they have?

Galle station is the busiest and generally safe with staff around during the day. Weligama and Matara are smaller and quieter. All have basic facilities — toilets, small shops, and waiting areas. Galle has the best facilities among the three. Keep valuables with you and be aware in crowded periods. Stations are generally fine during daylight hours. At night they become very quiet, so it's better to have transport arranged if arriving or departing late. Most travelers use these stations without issues by staying alert and keeping belongings secure. Galle station is the most traveler-friendly of the south coast stations.

Galle is the busiest and safest feeling. Smaller stations are fine during the day but quiet at night. Keep valuables with you.
