Stilt guy at Weligama wants two thousand rupees to stand there for a photo - is that even a real fisherman

Drove the south a few days ago. Three men on stilts in the shallows next to a parking bay, empty nets, waving us over. Instagram made it look like a living culture. Are we paying for a costume.

Traditional stilt fishing exists. What you met on the tourist strip is mostly a photo stand. They will pose, you pay, you leave. If that bothers you, do not stop. If you want the picture, agree a price before the shutter - a small note, not a speech about culture. Do not climb the stilt.

We paid 1,000 LKR for two of us, felt silly, got the photo. Further east toward Koggala we saw one man who actually had fish. Rare.
