I want to base myself somewhere with excellent intermediate surfing but also heavy late night beach parties Which town is better and where should I stay

Ahangama is the undisputed winner for this specific combination. Hiriketiya is beautiful but the parties shut down early due to noise complaints in the small bay. Ahangama has legendary late-night parties at venues like Lamana and Trax. Crucially, Ahangama also has multiple intermediate surf breaks (like Kabalana and Marshmallows) spreading the crowds out.

Look into Dreamsea or Camp Poe in Ahangama. They are massive surf camps built around the social party lifestyle. They do not have curfews for late arrivals.
