I am traveling in June and want to surf. I know Arugam Bay is in season but I heard it gets too crowded. Are the south coast beaches still surfable

In June, the southwest monsoon brings heavy onshore winds and rain to the south coast (Ahangama, Weligama, Hiriketiya), ruining the surf and creating dangerous rip currents. Arugam Bay on the East Coast is absolutely where you need to be. Yes, Main Point gets crowded, but you can take a tuk-tuk to Elephant Rock or Peanut Farm for less crowded, world-class waves.

I tried to surf Weligama in June once. The water was brown, choppy, and totally blown out. Do not bother with the south coast in summer.

If you drive a scooter to the remote breaks, be careful of wild elephants crossing the dirt roads at dusk!

Watch out for tuk-tuk drivers in Arugam Bay overcharging for the trip to Peanut Farm. Agree on a return price before you leave.

Thanks, Arugam Bay it is. I will rent a scooter to avoid the tuk-tuk haggling.
